At some point in every business owner’s journey, you come face to face with the fact that you MUST have a piece of digital real estate that you own. But, with all of the platforms out there today, it’s hard to know which platform is the right one to go with.
There is no one size fits all clear shot in making that determination. However, there are some considerations worth taking note of. Both custom websites and WordPress sites have their place, their own pros, and cons.
What is a custom website?
A custom website is a site built completely from scratch. By scratch I mean, there’s no templated or drag and drop interface. Websites from scratch are built using coding languages like Ruby on Rails, Javascript, and Python. These sites are fully customizable to your brand and business.
Custom Websites are GREAT when you need a piece of software that involves complex. data manipulation. By that I mean, are you building the next Facebook? Do people need to be able to sign in or transform data in some way? If your site goes beyond primarily sharing information – then building from scratch is probably best for you.
What is a WordPress website?
A WordPress website is a website built using a template. These sites are easier to get up and running because of the plethora of resources available to you!
Note: I mention WordPress website here, but this goes the same for other platforms such as Wix, Squarespace, Hubspot, etc.
WordPress websites are great if you’re building largely static and informational websites that do not require much data manipulation. They are perfect for when you need to get something up fast. You can pop in a template and plug in your data and go live in a matter of days.
So which one is best for you and your business?
Short answer, that depends. It depends upon the speed at which you want to ‘go live’. It depends on the level of customizability you need. It depends on the budget you are willing to spend. Among others!
As I was writing this I realized that it’s way too much to include in a single blog post. I’ll be turning this into a short series to explore this topic more deeply.
